What is your favorite type of character in a playwright, book, or general story?  This can include what the character does but I'm not looking for a name or a title for some unique character.  I'm also not looking for the actor/ress for this question.

The cynical, shady guy with the troubled background who has a bleak outlook on life, usually used in such a way to generate humour.
